He is Oliver Barrett IV, a rich jock from a stuffy Wasp family on his way to a Harvard degree and a career in law. She is Jenny Cavilleri, a wisecracking working-class beauty studying music at Radcliffe. Opposites in nearly every way. But they fell in love. This is their story.

A His and Her bit (the latter in the original sense - this was a one-shot in the L.H.J. and it's not much more developed here) about Oliver Barrett IV, "All Ivy" Harvard Preppie who plays hockey and Jenny Calliveri, a "Cliffie" who plays the harpsichord, and how they fall in love. She says it's her "negative social status" and a way of getting back at Oliver III (the generation gap here is a gulch although it will all be squared off) and when they marry, father and son don't speak at all. But then none of this is for very long - Jenny has leukemia and the last scene will get to you even if you resist the sentimental torsion and have a skin like naugahyde. (Kirkus Reviews)
