The sparkling novel about the funny side of life in Yorkshire, from the author of TOO MANY GODMOTHERS. If it hadn't been for the dog, Jo Patterson would never have overheard that bizarre snatch of conversation on the grouse moor. A year ago Jo didn't know a grouse from a Rhode Island Rooster. Now she's up to her eyebrows in mud because a day's labour on the shoot will earn her a precious GBP20 and an even more precious few hours of contact with humanity. If she hadn't gone on the shoot she wouldn't have remembered that conversation about security consultants when she discovers that her soon-to-be-ex-husband may have sold their business for much less than it's worth. And if she hadn't remembered the conversation she would never have kicked over the ant's nest of trouble ...

Fans of quality light literature will love this witty entertainment, which has us following abandoned Jo Patterson as she leaves her adulterous husband in Wimbledon and sets up camp in the wilds of Yorkshire. Camp here is actually the dream cottage bought by her husband and, in her schemes to rescue him from the clutches of his mistress and out of the financial mess to which he has reduced the family fortunes, Jo moves from suburban housewife to part-time beater on the castle shoot and full-time private investigator. Suspecting fraud, with her husband as victim, she enlists the help of both former employees and new northern chums and dashes from one scrape to another until the truth is revealed. Author Kate Fenton is an accomplished writer of contemporary comedy and her admirers will relish the pace and plotting of this latest story. But underneath the broad range of characters and caricatures who people her heroine's new life is a genuinely empathetic voice for the hopes and despairs of the discarded wife. There's no self-pity in the feisty Jo Patterson, but as romance and a possible happy ending appear on the horizon there is a sensitivity and vulnerability in her which makes this more than just a jolly romp amongst the pheasants.
