Book Reviews - Everything's Eventual by Stephen King

UK Kirkus Review » This collection of short stories, King's first since Nightmares & Dreamscapes in 1993, includes 14 tales of which four have already won awards, and the e-book 'Riding the Bullet', here published for the first time on paper. It tells the story of Alan Parker, hitchhiking to visit his dying mother, who takes the wrong ride and goes far further than he ever intended. 'Autopsy Room Four' delivers a spine-tingling kick-off, a fantastic twist on the buried-alive theme that has you squirming with frustration, while 'In the Deathroom' brings vividly to life evil of the very mundane human kind in a South American interrogation room, where Mr Maybe I Can - just for once - wins over Mr Even if I Do. The title story shows Dinky Earnshaw learning from Mr Sharpeton that a real job is about fringe benefits - he gets a free house and everything he wants delivered, simply for writing on it DINKY'S DAYBOARD and receiving $70 through the door every week that he simply must get rid of before the next envelope. There has to be a catch - and there is. King is undoubtedly one of the master storytellers and this collection is excellent as ever. Eerie and intense rather than shocking and gory, his stories are never better than when observing human psychology and nature. Dedicated fans - Constant Readers - will enjoy the balance of the collection even if they have seen the older stories before. Provocative and not for the faint-hearted, they range from raw horror to bizarrely mundane everyday life to make up a book of brilliant, compelling dark tales. Curl your toes, wipe your sweaty palms and enjoy. (Kirkus UK)

US Kirkus Review » These days, grumbles King (Hearts in Atlantis, 1999), "When you get done, you get done . . . I don't want to finish up like Harold Robbins." (Robbins wrote into his 80s despite aphasia from a stroke and kept publishing despite being dead.) (Kirkus Reviews)
