When four old school friends decide to make some easy money, they pick the wrong target. Very wrong. Robbing a small supermarket on a Manchester estate looks easy - but with one of them wounded and a dead body on their hands, could things get worse? They could. The supermarket is merely the front for something bigger. The friends are small fish who have unwittingly plunged into a very big pond and now they are swimming with the great white sharks of the criminal underworld.

Mandasue Heller, described on the cover as 'Manchester's answer to Martina Cole', uses her experience of living in the notorious Hulme Crescents in that city to provide a convincing background for her story of a gang of criminals who seriously misjudge the target of their armed robbery. Lee and Mal enlist their old school friends Sam and Ged for what seems to be an easy attack on a supermarket. However, they fail to realize that Pasha Singh's recent prosperity derives not from the success of his shop but from his connection with The Man, a major figure in organized crime. They quickly find themselves involved in murder. This is a fast-moving and entertaining crime novel set in a sordid but believable milieu. One of the novel's strengths is its strong sense of an interdependent community of crime with a range of lawbreakers and their families at one extreme and police officers at the other. A large number of characters play important roles and Heller sketches them clearly and memorably. Her female characters, though initially appearing to play supporting roles to their men, are particularly powerfully written. Suzie, the teenage girlfriend of the controlling, odious Mal, so much under his thumb that she is prepared to try and retrieve the mask he has stupidly left at the scene of the crime, develops as a character throughout the novel, as does the forceful Wendy, who, pregnant by Sam at the start of the book, goes into labour at the height of the gang's tribulations. This is a powerful and exciting account of lawbreaking and its repercussions. (Kirkus UK)
