Description - Distinctiveness, Coercion and Sonority by Bruce Moren

Careful inspection of cross-linguistic vowel length and consonent weight leads to the undeniable conclusion that a unified theory of moraicity across segment types is warranted. This book provides such a unified theory. Using a distinction between two types of weight - coerced and distinctive - this work provides a broad cross-linguistic descriptive typology of segment weight and a simple and economical account for the observed descriptive generalizations. The book concludes by placing these specific findings and proposals in a broad theoretical context. This book provides a unified field theory of moraicity, contending that there are two types of weight, labelled here as coerced and distinctive. Using optimality theory, Moren challenges traditional theories of vowel/consonant dichotomy and inherent moraicity.
