This should open up a whole new world for the boy or girl with scientific bent. First there's a description of a microscope, its parts, how to use it, how to prepare a home laboratory. Then, in successive experiments, with readily available material, vegetable, animal, mineral microscopic life is studied. Foods, household substances, things found alive in nearby streams and marshes, woods and fields and gardens, all yield specimens which any child could gather. The chapters are short - one to each experiment. But through each one, basic lessons are learned so that the beginner will be prepared to go by himself to further research. An excellent first book, which could be followed by Frank Thone's The Microscopic World (Messner). (Kirkus Reviews)
