This volume provides a survey of the history of architecture in Europe and North America, from ancient Greece to the present. Ian Sutton focuses both on the technological achievements of architects, and on aesthetic considerations, and stresses that architecture is both a part of history, and an art form in its own right. Arranged chronolgically, the book is divided into chapters on classical, early Christian, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, neoclassical, 19th-century revivalism, international modernism and postmodernism, with all the famous architects documented and described. A range of examples illustrate the text, and space is given to Eastern Europe, and ideologically suspect styles like Stalinist classicism.

Reviews

UK Kirkus Review » Easily the most accessible introduction to western architecture, this short survey is at the same time remarkably comprehensive, taking in the whole history of building in Europe and North America over the last 2,500 years. It is also an original and far-reaching account. The history of architecture, it argues, is not simply a matter of dates, architects and styles, but also the way that buildings are experienced and the ideas that lie behind them. Architecture is both a utilitarian activity - people have to live, work and worship in buildings - and an art form, as expressive and exciting as painting and sculpture (and often more so!). This book traces the ways in which these two processes have co-existed. The story of western architecture is, of course, an old story, but Ian Sutton retells it in a new and refreshing way, showing how social and technological changes have conditioned the way buildings were conceived, from Greece and Rome through to the astonishing flowering of opportunities and skills in the 19th and 20th centuries. All the familiar names have their place in the book, but new perspectives and up-to-date research also provide many fresh insights. An admirable guide for anyone who wishes to know more about the buildings around them. (Kirkus UK)
