Description - The Complete Letters of Vincent Van Gogh by Vincent van Gogh
The letters of Vincent van Gogh lay bare the events of his dramatic life, providing remarkable insight into the creative process, and touching revelations of his personal anguish. They are reproduced in these three volumes with over 200 ink drawings that the artist sketched into them. Most of the letters were sent between 1872 and 1890 to the artist's brother, Theo, and it was Theo's son, Vincent W. van Gogh, who acted as consulting editor for this publication. A memoir by Theo's wife serves as the introduction.

UK Kirkus Review »
A welcome reissue of the only complete English edition of Van Gogh's letters, first published in 1958 and now complete with the 200 or so drawings that decorated the original letters. Put together with the help of Vincent's nephew (the recipient of most of the letters), these documents provide an intimate and revealing insight into the creative process and the dramatic life of a tortured artist. So detailed are they, so immediate and so complete a record of his life and thoughts, it's as much as you can do not to seize a pen yourself and send some words of comfort when he cries: 'I have worked and economized, and yet I have not been able to avoid getting into debt; I have been faithful to the woman, and yet I had to leave her...' (September 1883). And with his high praise, he sends you rushing back to the drawings of Millet: 'When I entered the hall of the Hotel Drouot, where they were exhibited, I felt like saying, 'Take off your shoes, for the place where you are standing is Holy Ground' (June 1875). Whatever your level of knowledge or interest in Van Gogh, this beautifully produced boxed set offers a truly remarkable and lyrical self-portrait in words to complement the striking images already so familiar to us.
