This is a visual sourcebook and survey of the medieval world: its people, its horizons, its defining characteristics, its whole culture. Framed by chapters which outline the way the Middle Ages began and ended, and the book consists of six other sections covering religion and the Church, nations and laws, daily life, art and architecture, scholarship and philosophy, and the World beyond Christendom. The glories of medieval painting, glass, manuscripts and architecture are examined, as well as the more intimate and darker side of life: home, shops, the family, work, war, disease and death. The book has a cross-referencing system and includes a 30-page illustrated biographical dictionary including family trees.

This is a truly sumptuous book. In more than 800 illustrations, 612 of them in colour, it conjures up the life of the Middle Ages in a vivid, evocative and brilliant form. The weighty volume is divided into eight major sections which deal with themes such as the Church, temporal power, art, everyday life and intellectual developments. Beautiful photographs and reproductions jostle for space on every page, drawn from the widest range of sources: illuminated manuscripts and psalters, paintings and stained glass, monumental architecture and sculpture, the sacred and the secular. Amplifying and explaining them is an excellent text by the distinguished medievalist Robert Bartlett. In a thought-provoking prologue he chronicles the many different ways in which successive generations have viewed the Middle Ages, from the Renaissance humanists who first coined the phrase and gave it negative connotations, through to the Romantics who revived the reputation and celebrated the achievements of the era, and the perceptions of the 19th and 20th centuries which have repeatedly reinvented and contested its meaning. Thereafter, the brief and incisive commentaries within each section amount to a first-rate introduction to medieval Europe and the whole is rounded off with a helpful reference section containing a biographical dictionary, chronology, maps, glossary and bibliography. The sum total is a book which is an absolute must for anyone interested in the period. (Kirkus UK)
