Salvadore Dali's provocative, visionary art has imprinted itself on the popular psyche as the very summit of Surrealism. Besotted by Freud's writings on the subconscious, he cultivated hallucinations to bring up images from his subconscious mind. His deliberate cultivation of paranoia, and the ambitions of his formidable wife, Gala, brought forth images of a dream world in which objects are transmogrified in bizarre and irrational ways. The melting watches, lobster telephones, mutilated eyes still amaze; they inevitably attracted movie masters like Luis Bunuel (An Andalusian Dog) and Alfred Hitchcock (Spellbound). Unlike today's sensationally fashionable artists, Dali had extraordinary skills, which he claimed had been inspired by Raphael. Gradually, the flamboyant, hysterical self-promotion became his main achievement, and his later works - some of them intensely religious - though technically accomplished, did not reach the peaks he'd achieved in the 1930s and 1940s. This book is a very thorough introduction to a master and his times, giving us also a stellar gallery of contemporaries. (Recommended as a prelude to a visit to museums or the Dali exhibition on London's South Bank.) (Kirkus UK)
