Follen was involved in student nationalism in Germany, eventually fleeing to Switzerland after conspiring in the first political murder of modern German history. He secretly continued activities for revolutionizing Germany, until his plans were discovered and he fled to America. Here he taught at Harvard University, and married into the American elite. This book explores his involvment in the importation of German ideas to New England, contributing to the fields of literature, philosophy, and theology. His life is traced until his crisis of self-confidence and accidental death at the age of 43.
