Description - Flood by Various

The ABC's best journalists and photographers bring you a moving account of the devastating Queensland floods, and a tribute to the bravery of individuals and communities. Foreword by Premier Anna Bligh. All royalties donated to the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal.

the Queensland floods of 2010-11 wreaked untold destruction, with three-quarters of the state declared a disaster zone. But out of the devastation to lives and property we have seen countless examples of the bravery and selflessness of individuals, and of communities banding together. With its extensive network of regional and metropolitan reporters, the ABC was on the ground when the floods hit, often getting first access to inundated towns and communities. As Premier Anna Bligh writes in her Foreword, 'the ABC played an incredibly important role during the flooding disaster, broadcasting regular updates across the state.' the events that ABC journalists witnessed, the people they met, and the extraordinary stories they were told are now captured in 14 poignant essays and hundreds of unforgettable images. From Emerald and Rockhampton to Brisbane and Grantham, this is a moving account of one of our worst natural disasters in living memory. It serves not only as a record of the floods and their impact on both small towns and cities, but as a lasting testament to the courage and strength of the people of Queensland. In buying this book you are helping the people of Queensland recover from the floods - the publisher will donate all royalties to the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal.

This is a wonderful book. It's only in hard times when wh really discover and appreciate what it means to be Australian. The "fair go" and "help a mate" principles really do kick in and are wonderfully displayed in this book. The stunning but sometimes shocking photographs in this book really give you a sense of what it must have been like for people living in the flood affected areas and brilliantly support the stories provided by those affected or there to give support in that time of crisis. It's amazing to hear of the strength that people discovered within themselves and to see people giving so much when they had so little. The only thing I would say about this book is that I would like to have seen a couple of stories by people who weren't media related, just your average Joe. I know their stories are told, but I still think that would have been nice. A wonderful book not only to lift your spirits in this time when we sometimes wonder about the existence of human kindness, but as a record of this devastating event. Anna Bligh's foreward is heartfelt and sincere and great to see that the profit from the sale of this book is going to the flood appeal.

In times of great tragedies, we see exactly what the human race is capable of - great bravery, great compassion, great feats of kindness to their fellow man. And that's what this book celebrates. The Queensland floods of 2010-11 had us all glued to our tv screens, desperately praying and hoping for people and communities we didn't know. We saw the devastation of towns some of us may have visited, or grown up in, or had family and friends living in. And we saw amazing people and communities who banded together to salvage what they could of their lives and homes and towns. And to do everything they could to help other people around them. We saw the masses of people in Brisbane alone, who weren't affected by the floods, come out into the streets and help their neighbours and people they didn't know, to clean up, to house them and feed them and do whatever they could for them. This book celebrates the selflessness and the compassion and the heart of Queenslanders. A wonderful read, a heartbreaking read - stories from ABC reporters, many of whom were affected themselves, or their hometowns, who were there on the ground and in the air, watching and recording for the rest of us.
