Description - An Introduction to Gaelic Poetry by Derick Thomson
First published in 1974, this up-dated paperback edition gives an account of Gaelic poetry from the 16th to the 20th century. It looks both historically and critically at all the major writers, and many of the minor ones, and gives reassessments of individual writers such as Alasdair Mac Mhaighstir, Alasdair and Mary MacLeod, and Iain Lom. Organized by period the book also traces the development of Gaelic poetry's principal genres, such as classical "bardic" verse and folk poetry. There are illustrative quotations (with English translations), an update on contemporary poetry and a bibliography supplement of publications since 1974.
