Description - African Philosophy in Search of Identity by D. A. Masolo
This text surveys the themes, debates and participants in the last 50 years of African thought to conclude that there is a distinctively African way of dealing with reality, problems and methods of acquiring knowledge. African thinkers, Masolo argues, have used philosophy both to articulate their identities and to contest identities imposed by outsiders. He examines "ethnophilosophy" and the work of Placide Tempels; Alexis Kagame's work on language and reality; the religious ethnology of John Mbiti; and the work of Fabien Eboussi-Boulaga, Marcien Iowa, V.Y. Mudimbe, Paulin Hountondji, Kwasi Wiredu and Odera Oruka. This study covers French and English speaking traditions and shows how African thought stems from particular cultural circumstances and embraces a wide range of many different perspectives.
