Description - Permanent Pilgrims by C.Bawa Yamba
This text looks at the concept of pilgrimage in Sudan, where West African muslim pilgrims are paradoxically not travelling very far on their pilgrimage to Mecca. The last five generations of pilgrims have been halted in "temporary" enclaves in Sudan. Despite this, the pilgrims see themselves as transients and their Sudanese villages as temporary stations on the way to Mecca. The author examines life in a set of West African pilgrim villages and asks why these people allow themselves to exist as "permanent transitories"?
