Description - Kicking Daffodils by Vicki Bertram
As well as locating women poets in relation to the specific cultural, geographical and literary histories that precede or surround them, this text offers a series of theoretical approaches to poetry. Chapters are arranged according to six main topics: women poets and modernism; the politics of place; (post)colonial contexts; the body; racial poetics; and reconfigurations. Within these sections, contributors discuss a range of poetry, including war poetry, Irish women's poetry, Scottish women's poetry, anthologies of birth poetry, Caribbean epic poetry, and science and poetry. Contemporary poets such as Evan Boland, Jean Binta Breeze, Jackie Kay, Denise Riley, Liz Lochhead and Grace Nichols are also covered. Rather than trying to establish a separate female poetic tradition or canon of female poets, the book demonstrates the needs for a thorough reinvestigation of the frameworks within which poetry is read and required, foregrounding gender alongside other relevant considerations.
