Thank goodness for a stress self-help book that isn't full of in-your-face mateyness. The last thing most stress victims need (but they too often get) is a strident guru full of 'you can do it' blather. Vera Peiffer, herself once a sufferer from stress, recognizes that a sympathetic understanding of the problem is worth a whole library full of blarney. Here she outlines the methods she has found to be helpful in her own life, and which have also helped others. She writes like a friend rather than a therapist - one passing on sound advice, not prescribing treatment. Peiffer is the author of other holistic books including her bestselling Positive Thinking, which was also notable for dispensing with flim-flam. The latest book covers a lot of ground despite its comparative brevity. Heart problems, smoking and diet are all brought into the stress equation, and there is encouragement for those who have previously tried and failed to be 'cured' of stress-related ailments. Peiffer points out that while some people thrive on stress, others don't handle it as well. The one element common to everyone is stress as a fact of everyday life. The secret is in learning to control it and make yourself its master. 'Stress resilience can be learned, even in the most challenging circumstances,' Peiffer promises, and goes on to outline a series of exercises that sometimes seem so obvious that you wonder why you never thought of them yourself. They can be carried out anywhere and by people of any age. While stress is a growing problem in modern times, so is depression. Indeed, the two often go together. The method of tackling this double blight, according to Peiffer, is straightforward and something that can be tried at different levels of intensity until the victim finds what best suits his or her needs. Peiffer knows her stuff, and better still she knows how to pass it on without condescension or false bonhomie. One of the best books of its type. (Kirkus UK)
