Book Reviews - Brief Encounters by Neil Rose

UK Kirkus Review » Neil Rose, columnist for the Law Society Gazette, shot up the bestseller lists with his outrageous first novel, Bagels for Breakfast, and is back on fine form with this latest book. Sex and the law are Roses favoured weapons of choice, and once again he treats us to both in abundance. Charlie Fortune, up-and-coming young lawyer at Babbington Botts, is desperate for a partnership. Already raking in oodles of cash, he knows he either goes up or out, for Babbington Botts only takes on the utterly ruthless and dedicated those who are prepared to sell their own grannies and stay at their desks 20 hours a day to finalise the deal. For the failures there is only the ignominy of the grotty, non-reclining chair and the 3 R memo, which meant 'you were on the fast track to your leaving party'. Just as his partnership prospects are beginning to look a little brighter, Charlie is aghast to learn that his childhood sweetheart and most loathed enemy, Elly Gray, is joining the firm. A brilliant lawyer and the last woman on earth hed want to work with, she's sickeningly likely to get the partnership in Charlie's place. But Charlie is in for a few surprises the old Elly seems to have mellowed and before long, the pair of them are involved in some very intimate contracts of their own. Has Elly really changed and can Charlie find happiness with her the second time around? As Roses intriguing plot unfolds, and the seamy underbelly of the corruption which lurks at the heart of Babbington Botts is revealed, Charlie finds his own loyalties are severely tested. It seems that the only place where he can find an element of sanity and decency is at the legal advice centre, where he gets involved helping Sparkle, a local hooker with a heart of gold, and three of her geriatric clients (all called Bill) who are being threatened with eviction. But Charlie finds having a conscience can be more dangerous than he realized. (Kirkus UK)
