A fun and fascinating tour of the by-ways of British legal history. Did you know that the law requiring a London taxi driver to carry a bale of hay on top of his cab to feed the horse was in force until 1976? Or that Welshmen are not allowed in the city of Chester after dark? Nigel Cawthorne has unearthed an extraordinary (and sometimes hilarious) collection of the most bizarre and arcane laws that have been enacted over the centuries. Some of which, incredibly are still in force! It is still illegal to enter the Houses of Parliament in a suit of armour.

UK Kirkus Review »
This book might not be sufficiently large and glossy to qualify as a 'coffee table' read but it undoubtably has other worthy credentials. It is the sort of book that can fall open at any page and catch your attention and it contains the necessary blend of humour, ridicule and fact to make it addictive. This curious collection of legal nonsenses covers almost every aspect of life from controlling obesity in the 1300's to the raising of the speed limit to 20 miles per hour in 1903. Almost all the 'laws' register somewhere on the ridiculous scale, but what fun it is to read about them - in particular to see how very recently many of them were still in force! Cawthorne seems to have taken a lot of pleasure in writing this book as many of the comments sound like personal 'asides' which makes this even more of a joy to read. (Kirkus UK)
