Those he mixed with have sauntered through the pages of history and taken their rightful place upon the stage - Cleopatra, Anthony, Julius Caeser; while Augustus, though just as, and perhaps more, influential, than any, remains elusive. In this book we will come to know not only Augustus the ruler, but Augustus the man of flesh and blood.

UK Kirkus Review » The great emperor Augustus, or Octavian as he was known at the time, lived and ruled in a turbulent time in ancient Rome. Although not born with a silver spoon in his mouth, as a boy he was adopted by his great-uncle Julius Caesar, who named him as his heir in his will. This was to change not just the boy's life, but the lives of just about everybody in the Empire. When Caesar was assassinated soon afterwards, Octavian was still a teenager, but the young pretender to the throne (as he had now become) lost no time in taking up arms to claim his inheritance. Over the next years he succeeded brilliantly in his ambition and reinvented himself as the absolute ruler of the Empire: his superhuman bravery in the face of repeated and dangerous challenges to his authority read like historical fiction. Thanks to a well-received, recent biography of Nero, the author is well qualified to tell this complex tale of Roman politics, and has produced an outstandingly readable account of the life and times of a man whose deeds and achievements still find an echo in our own lives 2,000 years later.
