A string of other high-profile lovers followed including Lord Malden, Charles James Fox and, most notably, Lt Col Tarlton. However, a miscarriage left Mary semi-parilysed and when her last lover deserted her to marry someone else, she wrote two novels in revenge. Her growing literary reputation brought in many friends, including Coleridge but her death saw the bailiffs trying to evict her from her cottage. This lively account of one of the most extraordinary women of her age is set against the social, literary, political and military background of the times.

Reviews

UK Kirkus Review » In her first biographical outing Hester Davenport explored the life of Fanny Burney, a lowly handmaid in the service of King George III. In her second release, The Prince's Mistress, she again assumes the role of royal correspondent, this time reporting from the court of George Prince of Wales. Her book delves into the tragic life of Mary Robinson, a much-admired poet and actress whose promising career was blighted by royal scandal, misfortune and a crippling disease which would eventually kill her. The first mistress of King George IV, she was a woman sworn to secrecy, and very much a victim of her own paranoia. In exquisite detail, Davenport discusses the rise and fall of the enigmatic Robinson, serving-up psychological as well as physical interpretations of her life. The result is reminiscent of such classical writers as Edith Wharton and Henry James. Elegant, accomplished and constantly endearing, The Prince's Mistress is a vital account of an equally vital human being. (Kirkus UK)
