Elizabeth I is perhaps England's most popular monarch. Born in 1533, the product of the doomed marriage between Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth was heir to her father's title, then disinherited and finally imprisoned by her half-sister Mary. But in 1558, on Mary's death, she ascended the throne and reigned for 45 years. Respected by her subjects and idolised by future generations, her fierce devotion to her country and its people truly made her England's fairest queen and icon. Here is her story.

Reviews

UK Kirkus Review » Elizabeth Tudor was born in 1533, the result of the ill-fated union between Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. She ascended the throne in 1558 aged 25 on the death of her half-sister Mary. However, this was never a fore-gone conclusion. She first had to suffer the indignity of being disinherited by her father - who was only interested in gaining that all imortant male heir - and being locked away in the Tower of London by Mary. Never one to be deterred from her course, Elizabeth then proceeded to hold onto the crown for nearly forty-five years, braving religious, political, personal and family strife. Alison Plowden's four biographies covering the origins, life and legacy of Elizabeth I have now been republished in one volume. This weighty tome is informative, fun and interesting and should sit on the bookshelves of everybody who has an interest in Elizabeth, whether it be purely professional or strictly amateur.
