Reviews

UK Kirkus Review » This unique biography was written with Spike?s blessing by his close friend Pauline Scudamore. She was apparently given complete access to all his files and correspondance, as well as to his home and family and she also interviewed many of his friends and colleagues. The book recalls the traumas of his childhood, his highly-strung Mother, his largely absent Father, the cruelties of a colonial upbringing, the break-up of his first marriage, the mortar bomb which blew him up in Italy and the overwork which gave him a mental breakdown during the ?Goon Show? but it also does much more: The hugely detailed research means that we start to build up a picture of the private Spike and it is only when we read this book that we begin to understand the sources of his often baffling irreverence. The onset of his depression and the ways he finds of dealing with it are particularly illuminating What emerges is an exceptionally candid and moving portrait of a highly gifted individual.
