UK Kirkus Review »
In this informative account, the author chronicles the unique role of the English court fool during the medieval, Tudor and Jacobean periods. Fools could be 'natural' or clever, and some were dwarfs who were thought to have magical powers. Court jesters emerged in Tudor times and some performed in Shakespeare's plays. Illustrations from medieval manuscripts are among the many fine colour plates and monochrome drawings which enrich the text. (Kirkus UK)
