The main period covered by the book is that of the Industrial Revolution, the years between 1750 and 1850, when the major developments and technical advances occurred that are today the concern of industrial archaeologists. Where relevant, however, the early history of particular industries, and further advances up to the early twentieth century, are also covered. All the principal extractive, construction and manufacturing industries are dealt with in depth, together with the histories of the means of transport by road, rail and water, of raw materials and finished goods. Inventions and their inventors are included, together with patent numbers and dates, to enable the more serious industrial archaeologist to take his or her studies further with ease. This book, with over 2,600 entries, is designed for everyone - students, professionals and academics, railway and canal enthusiasts, and anyone interested in Britain's industrial history. Easy to use, it provides clear definitions of all the terms and words used by industrial archaeologists. Full descriptions of function and design are given where appropriate, and line diagrams and black and white photographs aid the explanations in many cases. The only book of its kind, "the Dictionary of Industrial Archaeology" will be invaluable for the amateur enthusiast and the serious industrial archaeologist alike.
