This is the first novel by dancer, comedian, film star and scriptwriter Rita Rudner, who won an award for stand-up comedy and a Grammy nomination for the audio version of her autobiography. Set in Miami, Los Angeles and New York during the 1980s, this story reveals the highs and lows of a showbusiness career. One year after the death of Mindy Solomon's mother, her father marries Smila, a Swedish masseuse, and 17-year-old Mindy decides to leave Miami to seek fame as a dancer in New York. Her accommodation at a woman's hotel is less than wholesome but there she meets another young wannabe, Ursula Duran. Mindy is brunette, naive and Jewish while Ursula is a tall, blonde, gorgeous Lutheran from Minneapolis, but they bond instantly. Worldly-wise Ursula is pursuing a modelling career and she teaches Mindy about the pitfalls of show business. Finding and keeping jobs is complicated by the arrival of Eva, Ursula's overbearing mother, who is horrified that Ursula dancing career is cut short when she is injured in a fall. Meanwhile, Mindy tries out for a comedy club and discovers her true calling in life. This amusing novel has much to say about relationships and the off-stage life choices of performers. Some very funny situations and pithy one-liners entertain, while the characters are sympathetically drawn and their tribulations elicit sympathy. A good read. (Kirkus UK)
