Book Review: Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield - Reviewed by Anita (27 May 2011)
Written in a similar style to Kate Morton’s novels, Diane Setterfield's debut novel “The Thirteenth Tale” is one of mystery, suspense and intrigue.
Summoned by the highly acclaimed author Vida Winter to write her autobiography, Kate Lea is drawn into the world of Angelfield House, once the home of the March twins, Adeline and Emmeline March.
Angelfield House is now in ruins, inhabited only by the ghosts of the past and the secrets it holds.
Why was Kate Lea bidden to Vida Winter to write her autobiography? What is Miss Winter’s connection to Angelfield House and the March twins? What is the terrible secret that is held within the shell of Angelfield House?
Whilst reading the book there are many times when you think you have worked out the ending, however, at every turn of the page you are thrown into a new direction which keeps you guessing.
A well written mystery, The Thirteenth Tale kept me entertained and captivated from start to finish. On the back of the book Cosmopolitan wrote “Start reading this on the bus and, I swear, you won’t only miss your stop, you might even lose the whole day”. I can say that twice, whilst reading this book on the bus, I only just looked up in time to get my stop!
Diane Setterfield is in her early forties. Having spent time in France, she now lives in Harrogate. THE THIRTEENTH TALE is her first novel.
