Well known for counting the numbers on Channel 4's Countdown programme, Vorderman has become just as famed for not counting the calories with her Detox Diet. The whole philosophy behind this plan is not to weigh food or yourself but rather 'to give your body a break by reducing the amount of toxins you take in and encouraging your body to eliminate old toxins'. It sounds perfectly reasonable, and the sections on 'what to eat' and 'what to avoid' re-emphasize a lot of what most of us probably already know. The core of the book is the diet plan itself, which consists of daily menus designed to provide the right balance of protein, carbohydrate, vitamins, minerals and fibre each day. Some are on the spartan side - particularly the Day 7 menu of breakfast of fresh fruit juice and fruit muesli, lunch of brown rice and sweetcorn salad and an evening meal of red lentil dahl with sunflower seeds and more fresh fruit - but Vorderman insists that you never feel hungry on this plan, and some of the recipes sound delicious. This is a revised edition of the original bestseller, with useful new sections on motivation for dieting and eating in restaurants and with friends. As the title suggests, this is not a quick-fix diet but a long-term guide to improving your eating habits, and for those committed to reforming their lives it should prove a reliable and inspiring volume.
