Description - The Work of Writing by Clifford Siskin
This work documents the growing professionalization of writing in the 1700s, as well as the ways in which both nationalist and entrepreneurial impulses worked to exclude women writers from the category of "professional writer" in the 19th century. The author draws on scholarship from history and the social sciences, aiming not just to understand a group of literary texts, but to rethink on a historical basis, the whole concept of literature.
