Description - War in Heaven by Charles Williams
Williams gives a contemporary setting to the traditional story of the Search for the Holy Grail. Examining the distinction between magic and religion, War in Heaven is an eerily disturbing book, one that graphically portrays a metaphysical journey through the shadowy crevices of the human mind.

US Kirkus Review »
Still another posthumous Charles Williams fantasy, in which he once again ponders the hair-line break between the real world and the supernatural world, the philosophies of the here and the nowhere, the constant and violent pull between good and evil. Set in London and its vicinity, and having to do with the quest for the Holy Grail, this is a glossed-over blood and thunder murder mystery with intellectual fittings. Categorically, the evil enemies who seize the Grail for their own special type of witchery are Sir Giles (who made his devilish appearance in Many Dimensions) bent on destroying the world;Gregory Persimmons, retired publisher who delights in black magic and other world experimentation on a little boy; a Greek chemist who understands the Grail's magical workings. On the credit side, there is the rather dull Archdeacon of Fardles, in whose church the Grail was discovered; there is the religious Duke who thinks that God is good, that the Grail is good, and that good will eventually win out; and there is the omnipotent stranger, Prester John... Williams has compressed within his cool, abstract style another vortex of horror. (Kirkus Reviews)
