Book Reviews - Chase the Heart by Maggie Osborne

US Kirkus Review » Romantic novelist Osborne's hard-cover debut: an Elizabethan romp through the Tudor court to France, its principals in lusty pursuit of bedded bliss and a cache of purloined letters. Queen Elizabeth I, moody and fading at 55, offers a penniless, barren young courtier, Lady Nellanor Amesley, a chance to stay in the royal graces after the girl's protector, the Earl of Leicester, dies. All Lady Nell must do is chase three Spaniards across Europe and retrieve from them a silver casket of letters written in Elizabeth's own hand. The letters are to be returned with seals unbroken, and if orders are disobeyed in any fashion, Lady Nell's companion-to-be, handsome young William Steele, ("The Fighting") Duke of Brampton, has instructions to kill her. Of course, the pair fall in love (or lust), uttering Elizabethanisms while they plummet ("God's teeth, woman!" and "God's balls! You don't want a man, you want a bloody stud!"), but for a long while, the prized missives elude the couple. When found, these reveal surprising things about Lady Nell's parentage and excellent reasons for the good Queen's anxiety. A means to reseal the now-opened envelopes is found, the Queen is placated, and the way to a happy ending is paved. Painfully poor writing and a slow start nearly obscure a witty plot, the lines of which display some agility and humor - but not enough to take flight. (Kirkus Reviews)
