The most prominent voice in Italian poetry after Eugenio Montale, Mario Luzi (1914-2004) is generally considered one of Italy's greatest contemporary poets and one of the most outstanding literary figures of this century. He participated in the most important reviews of avant-garde literature during the 1930s. He published seven collections of poetry in addition to a collected poems. In 1978, he was awarded the prestigious Viareggio Prize for Poetry. This is the first English translation of his work in book form. Translator Luigi Bonaffini lives in Brooklyn, New York. He is a professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. He has translated the work of numerous Italian poets.
