Description - Herr Krupp's Berthawerk by Theodore H Lehman
Herr Krupp's Berthawerk is a historical novel about the experience of a young man taken from Auschwitz to work as a slave laborer in the Berthawerk armaments factory owned by Krupp industries. This story gives us an insight into the conditions under which Jewish slave laborers lived and worked in Germany under the Nazis. The author, Theodore H. Lehman, survived concentration camps and slave labor to escape and eventually arrive to the United States, closing off the near death experiences in the Nazi netherworld to the back of his mind. Decades later he received a letter from a German commission inquiring information about one of the guards who had killed prisoners, and Lehman began to re-live those events. At that point he decided to write a historical novel, narrating his life in Auschwitz and Berthawerk. In this powerful and compelling story, the author allows us to look at the darkest expression of human behavior, as well as seeing the face of individuals who could maintain hope in the face of it.
