Description - In Kant's Wake by Tom Rockmore

This book presents a selective account of some main tendencies of the twentieth century Western philosophical debate against the wider background of the modern Western philosophical tradition. It makes sense to pause from time to time to take stock of where we are in the debate, what has been accomplished, what new directions are emerging, what problems have been solved (or resolved) and how the present phase of the discussion relates to earlier discussion. The three main tendencies include: Anglao-American analytic philosophy, continental philosophy, and American pragmatism. The book assumes that philosophy and the history of philosophy are continuous. What is distinctive is the claim that the three new philosophical approaches (Anglo-American analytic philosophy, continental philosophy, American pragmatism), all of which arose independently around 1900, can each be understood as reacting in different ways to Kant. This claim is doubly useful: it provides a way to understand the different strands of the twentieth century discussion as forming a whole: and it provides a standard to evaluate the extent to which the debate in the twentieth century served to move the problems forward.
