Jeru Kabbal was a twentieth-century spiritual teacher and guide. Born in 1930 in the United States as Richard Dorin Shoulders, he studied traditional Western psychology in his younger years and found it very limited. However, he was irrevocably committed to and passionate about understanding and going beyond the mind. He became devoted to understanding how we as human beings could improve the quality of our life and relationships. He studied with several spiritual teachers in the East, including Osho, and became particularly drawn to the teachings of Krishnamurti, Nisargadatta, and Ramana Maharishi, as well as to the mystical elements of Christianity. However, he was always an independent spiritual thinker. For several years he conducted workshops called Dehypnotherapy, out of which the Clarity Process originated. After a prolonged solitary retreat, in about 1990, he chose to call himself Jeru Kabbal. He died in 2000. Leonard M. Zunin, MD, is the author of many articles and two books.
