This provocative anthology provides inspiration on how to teach, think, and talk about comic art in the classroom and beyond. Featuring essays, interviews, visual material, and syllabi by more than 60 teachers, professionals, and leaders from the field, the book provides an in-depth view of the art, business, education, and history of cornic art. Starting with a comprehensive overview of the comics field, the book is organized by genre and medium, with chapters including magazine cartoons, editorial cartoons, political comics, comic strips & panels, humour comic books, action/superhero comic books, alternative comic books, and graphic novels. In addition, three sections feature comic art and its role in related fields such as animation, design, and illustration; course syllabi and experiential profiles by top teachers; and essays on how to survive and thrive as a comic artist. The editors focus on the elements of narrative and storytelling but also include essays on the development of practical skills such as storyboarding and writing. A survey of the brightest and best of American comic art, this unique read will fascinate both professionals and students as well as the booming fan community. The book features the stars of today's comic arts and illustration scene, such Fred Seibert, J.J. Sedelmeyer, Gary Baseman, Art Spiegelman, and Jules Feiffer.
