UK Kirkus Review »
Growing up in the Northwest Side of Chicago before the Second World War, Nelson Algren watched everything around him, and in this second novel, first published in 1942, he creates a masterful picture of the underside of urban life, full of povery, hopelessness and crime. The story is set in the Polish community and centred around Bruno Bicek, a young boxer who is drawn into the vicious gang culture of the inner city. Sparsely written and often hauntingly beautiful, the story is littered with harrowing moments - when Algren describes in matter-of-fact prose the decapitation of a rabbit we begin to get a feel for how little life meant in some quarters, and Bruno's inevitable downfall inspires as much sympathy as horror. This is a painful but deeply moving classic that draws the reader deep into the damaged lives of its characters. (Kirkus UK)
