"The Hierophant of 100th Street" is a rare thing, a metaphysical novel set in a violent world of gangs, prisons, and the army. Richly descriptive of the people, sights and sounds of the East Harlem neighbourhood where Adam Kadman, 17 years old, and his 9-year-old brother John start their lives, the narrative follows them through their respective initiations into the hard life of the streets while simultaneously introducing real-life characters who dwell in the life of the spirit; Clifford Bias and Dr. Richard Ireland, mid-century psychics who were key forerunners of today's New Age.Like most young men who came of age in the 1960s, Adam is drafted into the Army and sent abroad. In an unexpected sojourn away from the New York City ghetto, Adam finds himself in Egypt. In the stifling context of repressive religious laws dictating clitoridectomy for girls and honour killings for women who break the rules, a doomed love affair unfolds between Adam and an innocent, passionate young Arabic woman.Adam appears as a warrior right out of West Side Story, attempting to overthrow the entire social structure - and ends up having to run for his life.
Back in the New York ghetto, John becomes embroiled in gang warfare, and lands in jail, struggling to survive in 'an underworld of psychopaths'. The worlds of the young Kadman men and the 'magus' Clifford Bias collide when Adam meets Clifford Bias and attends one of his public psychic readings. In a dramatic scene Bias reveals Adam's own psychic abilities and presses on him the importance of his life's purpose. 'When God chooses one for a specific task,' the old man tells Adam, 'he doesn't pick from bible-quoting groupies. But looks instead to broken cities for that candidate beneath the rubble, unconquered, and ready to face his adversary with unflinching grace.' Adam becomes Bias' pupil and begins to learn the secrets of the Ancient Mystical Order of Seekers, a hidden society of magi dedicated to the Higher Self.
