Description - House Rules by Jodi Picoult

'Picoult writes with unassuming brilliance.' - Stephen King

'Picoult has become a master - almost a clairvoyant - at targeting hot issues and writing highly readable page-turners about them . It is impossible not to be held spellbound by the way she forces us to think, hard, about right and wrong.' - Washington Post

Jacob Hunt is a teenage boy with Asperger's syndrome. He's hopeless at reading social cues or expressing himself to others, and like many children with Asperger's, Jacob has an obsessive focus on one subject - in his case, forensic analysis. He's always showing up at crime scenes, thanks to the police scanner he keeps in his room, and telling the cops what they need to do - and he's usually right. But then one day his tutor is found dead, and the police come to question him. Reluctance to make eye contact, stimulatory tics and twitches, inappropriate gestures, all these can look a lot like guilt. Suddenly, Jacob finds himself accused of murder.

House Rules looks at what it means to be different in our society, and at the extremes of love and loyalty a family must call upon to help each other overcome impossible circumstances.

Book Review: House Rules by Jodi Picoult - Reviewed by (28 Jun 2011)

This is a beautiful and terrifying book about a special young man and his family, faced with a situation that looks like the outcome can be nothing but extremely negative. It takes the perspective of different people involved in the story and wonderfully educates us in the world of autism/aspergers.

From my studies into Aspergers I was extremely amazed at how well Jodi Picoult can teach any reader about this syndrome and the authentic way she explained it. It can also be used as a tool to explain to highschool students the perspective of another student with aspergers and is so insightful.

The middle part of this huge read does seem to draw out the story a little but by persisting it catches you and you can not put it down for at least the last quarter.

This book has been written in the Jodi Picoult recipe, which takes a hot topic and fleshing it out to bring us a story that is educational and entertaining as well as a twist which makes us questions what we would do if placed in the same moral dilema. I find that it is well researched and topical, and her knowledge is sound and she will bring knowledge and understanding to many readers.
