'I was eight years old when I saw my first elf' ...And for unlikely hero Michael it wasn't his last. Michael's unfortunately (but accurately) named girlfriend Cruella, doesn't approve of his obsession with the little people, but the problem is that they won't leave him alone. And who can blame them when it is his own stepfather who is responsible for causing them so much misery. Oh yes. Daddy George knows that elves can do so much more than the gardening. LITTLE PEOPLE is the hilarious new comic novel from Tom Holt. Find out more about this and other Orbit titles at www.orbitbooks.co.uk

Tom Holt has written everything from ancient history to sci-fi, taking in period drama and poetry along the way. Here he comes up with a humorous fantasy right out of the Harry Potter mould, and what a rip-roaring tale it is. The story opens with the hero, Michael, declaring that he saw his first elf at the age of eight. This caused him all sorts of psychological hang-ups and his disclosures about an elf world didn't go down well with prissy girlfriend Cruella. In typical Holt fashion we then embark on a rollercoaster journey that is at times wildly funny and satirical but also full of hidden depths. Serious messages underlie the story of elves being held in servitude to Michael's stepfather at a sweatshop factory, although the allegories are well enough disguised to go unspotted if you want to read the book on its most superficial and entertaining level. Teenagers in particular will love the crisp dialogue, the gobsmacking moments of revelation and the magical world into which Michael ventures to right some horrible wrongs. The pace never flags and mindboggling incidents are scattered with awesome abandon that reveal a writer thoroughly in synch with his make-believe domain and its people. Tom Holt's style is chatty, perhaps a bit too tongue-in-cheek for the adult market, but brilliantly imaginative. And at the end comes a rather sad (and unnecessary) twist - but then this is after all Tom Holt and in his books nothing ever turns out as you expect. (Kirkus UK)
