Book Review: Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild - Reviewed by Romi Foster (15 Jul 2011)
Ballet shoes is a novel about three children. All found by a man who travels the world in search of adventure, one is called Pauline, her parents died, one is called Petrova, her parets also died and the other is little Posy, her mother gave her up, because she loved her ballet more than her own child. When Great Uncle Matthew leaves on a expedition and is gone for a long long time, money starts to run out, and before long things are having ot be sacrificed and then the house is let to boarders. The three sisters are given a chance out of the blue, to train at a stage school where they will learn to dance, tap, sing and act. Posy is thrilled, for she always is dancing anyway, and Pauline finds her calling in acting, but Petrova would much more prefer to be fixing cars then doing any of those silly things that they must do. Will they all find something they love in the school? Or will things all get too much, and will the three give it up? Those are the questions!
Noel Streatfeild (1895-1986) was born in Amberley, Sussex. Her father was Bishop of Lewes and her great-grandmother was the prison reformer, Elizabeth Fry. She was a mischievous child, often in trouble at home. While growing up, she and her sisters put on plays for parish causes and, after making munitions during World War I, she trained as an actress. Noel Streatfeild started by writing books for adults. Then in 1931 she published her first children's book. Her best-loved novel, BALLET SHOES, was published in 1936. When World War II broke out, she worked in canteens for the armed forces and for those injured by bombs. She wrote over 80 books in her lifetime and lived in London till her death.
