UK Kirkus Review »
'He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves,' said H G Wells. Louis Wain was a household name at the turn of the century for his outstandingly popular cat illustrations, but mental illness overcame him and he died virtually forgotten. Here Rodney Dale, who was largely reponsible for the revival of interest in Wain's work (he organized a retrospective at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1972-73 that turned Wain into a cult, 'collectable' - and now much faked - artist), traces Wain's life and work, and includes extracts from Wain's own writings. But the best thing about this book is Wain's distinctive cats themselves - the early realistic cats, the popular 'humanized' cats, and the later weird, staring cats whose eyes radiate a strange electricity - all beautifully reproduced in colour.
