A mock autobiography, in which the hero wrestles with the impossibility of explaining anything without explaining everything. In the process he explores every conceivable fictional device in a brilliant display of narrative fireworks.

Very fashionable today, especially with those who see him as the father of postmodernism. Sterne is a rogue author, playing with his material, with novelistic conventions and with the reader; he intervenes directly when he feels like it and practises a scurrilous and often surrealistic wit. He is unabashedly comical about anything he chooses, especially if it was in his day, the mid-18th century, forbidden territory - marital sex, for instance. Review by Richard Hoggart, whose books include 'The Uses of Literacy' and 'First and Last Things' (Kirkus UK)
