In the comic masterpiece which established him one of the greatest writers in the English language, Naipaul follows the fortunes of Mr Biswas, the outsider who refuses to conform to the customs of his grander in-laws whose house he lives in. Finally finding a house of his own, he triumphs over the smaller minds who would repress him.

One of the few indisputably great novels of the century. Mr Biswas is one of the great tragicomic characters of the century. Born into the expatriate Indian community in Trinidad, he is trained as a pundit, but fails in his vocation. He becomes a journalist, only to fail at that too. He marries into a large, all-enveloping family but remains an outsider within it. He's not an admirable character but anybody who reads this book will be the richer for having known him. Review by Pat Barker, Booker Prize-winning author of Regeneration Trilogy (Kirkus UK)
