Description - The Family Orchard by Nomi Eve

A beautifully crafted story of a Jewish family, reaching back five generations. Using births, deaths and family legends, here are stories of how people meet and fall in love, of family secrets and tragedies, of sex and marriage. Yochanan and his wife Esther who lived happily despite Esther's long-time affair with the local baker; Avra who has a penchant for stealing (and returning) who marries Shimon, an immigrant from Russia; Miriam, a child of Eastern Europe who sews her family's futures into her cloth. Shyly sexy and funny, always rooted in the domestic and the familiar, this is an enchanting, complex novel which draws on the voices of many generations from far and wide, reaching across the Diaspora - Israel, Europe and America.

Book Reviews - The Family Orchard by Nomi Eve

UK Kirkus Review » A celebration of life, love and continuity, about people who know who they are, where they came from and, on the whole, where they're going. Eve traces five generations of her own people, who emigrated (or escaped) from eastern-European countries in times of strife and oppression, to find new hope in their own country: Israel, where, although they didn't necessarily find peace, they felt comfortable, and secure enough to put down roots and plan for the future. The large part of her story (Eve says) is handed-down fact and memory, mostly through her father, whose own words are set in separate paragraphs; the rest is surmise and imagination...but the joins don't show. The clan has distinguished ancestors; Eve's great-great-great grandparents (with whom the story begins) were Rabbi Yochanan Schine, a student of the famous Chatham Sofer, and his wife Esther, grand-daughter of the chief rabbi of the British Empire. They migrated to Palestine and married in 1837, in Jerusalem, and founded a dynasty. Eve and her brother Boaz were the first generation to be born in America, but spent many summers in the homeland, and Eve's evocation of, especially their own small corner, and even more especially the citrus orchards from which the family derived its income, is magical. It is also imaginatively illustrated from an old book: The Land and the Book, a treasured possession of Eve's mother. The narrative is full of quirky humour and endless stories of life, love, sex, births, deaths, laughter, tears - and secrets; and the strength gained from confident relationships and family pride. A delicious, poetic, inspired, book; a huge undertaking for a first novelist (it took her eight years to write), but one which Eve herself says she was 'compelled to write'. (Kirkus UK)
