Book Review: Prohibited Zone by Alastair Sarre - Reviewed by (23 Aug 2011)

Set around the Woomera Detention Centre and Political storm. We meet the main character of this political thriller Steve West. Alistair Sarre weaves a thriller of many components, as a weaver brings colours and patterns with the warp and weft of the loom. There is history – Political, Geographic and histories of settlers to South Australia. You will meet very colourful characters and many brutal ones as well. Steve West is a mining engineer and ex-football player of some renown, looking to head away from the dust and heat for the cool and Green of Adelaide for some well deserved rest. At least that is his current plan. What happens to him being in the ‘wrong place at the wrong time’ meeting Kara a ‘rebel with a cause’ will turn his world and holiday plans upside down. Action packed with colourful language throughout the book. There is a lot of attention at times paid to many details that I personally found it difficult to get through the story line. The author explores the whole Illegal Immigrant issue from the viewpoint of a few people from inside the Detention Centre, as well as the Security guards there, many whom Steve is well acquainted with. There are many twists and turns in the plot and also showing that given the ‘right set of circumstances’ we are all of us, human. I feel the author is also challenging people to not just believe everything that they read in the newspapers or hear on the news; but to think and consider for themselves. A book that has a lot to offer the right reader; sadly I am not one of them. If you like political intrigue and contentious issues then this is a book for you.

Book Review: Prohibited Zone by Alastair Sarre - Reviewed by (13 Jun 2011)

Steve West’s (Westie) scheduled week off in Adelaide takes a series of brutal and unexpected turns when he is approached by human rights protestor Kara at an outback pub. Westie finds himself begrudgingly providing transport and protection from the authorities for Kara and her highly sought companion, Saira – an escaped detainee from the Woomera detention centre. The Prohibited Zone is a very enjoyable read, with solid characters and a great story-line. Main character Westie is a laid-back mining engineer, with a sardonic sense of humour and strength of character (balanced nicely with a few good flaws) that encompasses the traits you want in a male Australian thriller novel hero. The relationships of major and minor characters intertwine nicely, building to just as many expected as unexpected surprises. Themes such as the plight of asylum seekers in Australia and the mixed reactions of the public, legal system and detention centre staff towards the mistreatment of detainees are covered in a thought-provoking way and strengthen the tone of the novel. Humourous, violent and even a little bit romantic, The Prohibited Zone is a fast-paced political thriller that will leave you hoping there are more Steve West adventures in the pipeline.
