Book Reviews - Australia by Robert Ross
US Kirkus Review »
The latest volume in a generally excellent series gathers 25 stories and novel excerpts from the continent whose influential early writers - such as Katharine Susannah Prichard and Henry Lawson - will be new to most American readers. Their stories, along with written versions of indigenous aboriginal tales and impressive work from contemporaries like Thea Astley and Elizabeth Jolley, are accompanied by several superb fictions from Australia's most well-known writers: Tim Winton's lively "Thomas Awkner Floats," David Malouf's "A Medium" (a compact counterpart of the studies of introverted adolescence common in his novels), and Nobel laureate Patrick White's flinty "The O'Dowds at Home" (from his novel The Tree of Man) are the best things in the book.
