Book Review: Belt Around My Bum by Martin Chatterton - Reviewed by (06 Nov 2009)

With a premise that enjoys a faint resemblance to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, this book of junior fiction for the 12-year-old reader is a fun frolic. Thanks to a love potion being bandied about, there are hearts aflutter and amiss, and it is up to the well meaning Willy Waggledagger to sort out the tangled romantic webs that have been woven. Not forgetting of course that there is also a wicked plot afoot by the King of the Faeries to wage a war on Queen Elizabeth for the prize of her diamondstudded belt, the young Willy has his work cut out for him. This is the second book featuring the young Willy Waggledagger, otherwise known as William Shakespeare, a creative approach at giving the legendary wordsmith a childhood--bound together with childish antics and mayhem. There are plenty of colourful characters and misadventures with the personalities lifting themselves well off the page. The dialogue employs an urban and a parochial tone that assists the reader to visualise the environment and the era within which the action takes place. Any narrative that introduces the junior reader to William Shakespeare, no matter how far fetched the plot, should be encouraged.
