CLASSIC RETRO IMAGES DOCUMENTING THE EXOTIC AND FORBIDDEN WORLD OF MALE HUSTLERS David Hurles ("Old Reliable") was uniquely able to provoke and capture raw emotional responses from men living on the fringes of society. This is a selection of his finest work. For over 40 years David Hurles documented the world of male hustlers. Credited "Old Reliable", Hurles' photographs were ubiquitous fixtures in gay publications in the '70s and '80s and continue to enjoy a strong following today. Hurles worked in San Francisco and Los Angeles - two cities renowned for their beauty and glamour, where the restless and disenfranchised from the rust-bucket eastern ghettos and parched heartlands drifted west in search of a sun-kissed climate, fame and fortune. Those that did not make it as musicians or movie stars often slipped into the hard underbelly of drifters, grifters and hustlers that haunt the city's streets: for Hurles, California offered the opportunity to observe these less fortunate, handsome, talented men who found their calling in California in less than honourable ways.
Hurles chose to downplay technical fireworks with his camera in order to focus on the emotional pyrotechnic of his models. As a documentary of youthful male ambitions, his pictures vibrate with self-assurance and dangerous sexuality.
