Description - Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1 by Hiromu Arakawa

Breaking the laws of nature is a serious crime!

In an alchemical ritual gone wrong, Edward Elric lost his arm and his leg, and his brother Alphonse became nothing but a soul in a suit of armor. Equipped with mechanical "auto-mail" limbs, Edward becomes a state alchemist, seeking the one thing that can restore his and his brother's bodies...the legendary Philosopher's Stone.

Alchemy: the mystical power to alter the natural world; something between magic, art and science. When two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, dabbled in this power to grant their dearest wish, one of them lost an arm and a leg...and the other became nothing but a soul locked into a body of living steel. Now Edward is an agent of the government, a slave of the military-alchemical complex, using his unique powers to obey orders...even to kill. Except his powers aren't unique. The world has been ravaged by the abuse of alchemy. And in pursuit of the ultimate alchemical treasure, the Philosopher's Stone, their enemies are even more ruthless than they are...

Book Review: Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1 by Hiromu Arakawa - Reviewed by (19 Jul 2011)

Written by Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist chronicles Edward Elric and his adventure in finding a philosophers stone to restore his body. While a very simple premise, this volume doesn't exactly start with that aswell! In fact, it begins right at the middle of the story, leaving readers incredibly invested on what truly happened for him to lose his body.

The story while sounding simple, is actually incredibly deep. Uses of forshadowing are very prominent in this volume, and it pays to remember everything that occurs, to fully reap rewards of later volumes.

Drawn by Hiromu Arakawa, her artwork is simple and effective. Characters are never off-model, but can sometimes appear 'bloated' due to comical moments occuring throughout this volume. Backgrounds themselves are adequately drawn, and help to show the fantastic world of Amestris.

Overall, a very good start to what can be a fantastic series. While some readers may be put off by the ambiguous start, it pays to be patient.
